Since I fell in love with blues music as a child, the American Deep South has been like a promised land to me, the land where the blues began. Much later, this dreamlike world revived when I read James Lee Burke’s Robicheaux series. When in 2011 and 2012 I got the chance to travel through Texas and Louisiana (in particular the part they call Cajun Country), I wondered in what ways this imaginary world of mine resembled reality. I made this series of oil paintings after I returned to the Netherlands, and because so much time has passed since those trips, reality is fading, and these paintings are based more and more on memory, nostalgia and illusion.
